The City RPG The City OOC The City Logs The Odalisque

It's a cold, dark night in New York City. The ground is wet from the evening rain, but the sky is now cloudless. You walk along the sidewalk, pulling your coat more tightly against your arms to protect from the sharp wind that's blowing. You hurry past a pack of homeless men, smoking cigarettes and downing bottles of beer in the alley.

A few blocks more and you hit your first patch of prostitutes. They eye you from the street corner even as you avoid their gazes. There's sex and sin on their skins and you bypass them as fast as you can.

But this is New York City. You know that there are lowlifes everywhere and if you've missed poverty and sex, there's death and greed waiting just around the corner.

You can hear the sounds of Manhattan beginning to covalesce around you and soon you see all of Manhattan spilling out every which way. It's been a long walk from where the taxi dropped you off, but you live in Brooklyn, not Manhattan, and you can only afford so much for a night of fun.

It hasn't been so bad, anyway, and you adjust your clothes as you spy the night club ahead of you. This is what you've been waiting for all week.

As you enter the club, you hear the last refrain of a familiar song.

So just lay your head down low, and don't let anybody know
That it's hard to live, yes it's hard to live in

The City.

Inside the club, everyone's waiting.

I hate to be nitpicky, but did you check this over with people who actually live in Manhattan? Or Brooklyn? Because this is kinda hugely inaccurate. There are very few places in the city where you are going to see whole groups of prostitutes and almost no one who lives in Brooklyn would take a taxi into Manhattan.

ETA: and, um, the neighborhood descriptions? Are bordering on openly offensive.

ETAETA Sorry! I thought this was yours. Either way, I would kind of make it clear to these people that their descriptions are really fucking offensive. Like, racist and homophobic and classist and pretty ignorant of New York lifestyles?

Some of the players do live in NYC and have weighed in, as have other random people (from what I see in the FAQ, at least.)

And, ah-hem, not going to lie I never actually read any of the descriptions and whatnot. Wikipedia + TV shows FTW XD

Haha, I saw this before you edited it and I was like woah, woah woah, take it up with someone else, since I didn't start it! But um, yeah, I would? But my problem is I don't really feel comfortable doing that (and I'm sure that makes me an ass or something in some way), but I only joined the game like 3 days ago, and I don't want to come off as "that asshole who joined the game and then gave us shit about how we run things" if you get what I mean?

I mean, I know they don't mind people weighing in, but when it's coming from someone who honestly really only knows NY based on TV stuff it seems a little...off?

Yeah, I just assumed that since you were advertising it it was your game? I don't know anyone else who posts huge long adverts unless they're mods! Sorry about that.

I think the issue here is that it goes beyond just stupid not having been to New York and into blatantly bigoted. Their info actually says "The homosexuals live in Chelsea!" like there is a queer ghetto, and it talks about some ethnicities that way, too. Which has nothing to do with the city; it's just...offensive.

Oh I normally don't, only did because they have a post with the advert and the coding for it, so nice and east XD

Oh, I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think they're trying to be offensive (because really, the slashing in that game isn't exactly a minimal amount), it just might come across that way?

ETA: So I talked to one of the mods, and she says that you're more than welcome to go make a comment to the FAQ with your problems with the descriptions.
